An interview with Ennes Higgins

Hi, I’m Ennes Higgins – an award-winning children’s book author, a mum of four, and someone who believes that imagination is one of the most powerful tools a child can have.
In my stories, you’ll often meet children who don’t quite fit the mould – and discover that this is exactly where their strength lies.
Q: Why do you write children’s books?
Because I’ve always been fascinated by how children see the world. They ask different questions. They notice things we overlook.
And sometimes, they struggle – not because something is wrong with them, but because they think differently.
My stories are for those children.
Q: Where do your ideas come from?
Often from everyday moments. A simple situation suddenly shifts – and turns into something magical.
I love that moment where reality and imagination begin to blur.
Q: Who is Lola?
Lola is curious, analytical, and incredibly smart. She doesn’t always find it easy to join in imaginative play – but she finds her own way into their siblings’ games – in her own way. And that’s what her stories are really about: finding your place without changing who you are.
Q: Where do you live?
I live just outside Berlin with my family.
We spend a lot of time outdoors – exploring forests, riding bikes, and, of course, reading many, many books together.
Because in the end, stories are often where the best adventures begin.
Q: What do you do when you don’t write books?
Alongside writing, I offer creative writing workshops for school children, getting them excited about creating their own written pieces.
I also support aspiring authors in bringing their own children’s books to life. Many of them have carried their story for years – but don’t know how to turn it into something real. I guide them through that process – from the first idea to a finished, published book.
If you’ve been carrying your own story for a while and feel that it might be time to finally bring it to life, I’d love to support you on that journey.
